  1. if it starts.runs for a short time then quits it sounds like the crank shaft seals are worn.thus loosing crank case pressure.which is vital in the running of a two stroke motor.

  2. well now!  i bet it's a v-8 three horse, right?  it has a coal-fired boiler and a 4 speed transmission...right?  DUH!

  3. If it has sat any length of time my guess would be old fuel in the carb(s) that has gunked up.

I have had this happen more than once. You can try draining the old fuel from the carb by removing the drain s***w at the bottom and putting new gas in, it might halp.

I hate to say it but if this is the problem you will probably have to take the carb off and get it thoroughly cleaned.

To avoid this in the future, every time you use it, while the motor is still in the water or as soon as you get home, disconnect the fuel line and run it til it dies, this will get most of the old gas out of the system and it makes a big difference. good Luck!!

  4. the gas and oil mix is 50/50  in the gas can. The carb is probably bad or the air filter is dirty. Does the choke work OK??

  5. 2 stroke is the simplest motor ever made.. make sure you have the vent open on the gas tank,  and no pin holes in the gas line.. air , spark and fuel is all ya need.

  6. What model, cylinders & HP? The V4's were inherently flawed, always idled rough through til at least the mid 70's. Otherwise, probably in need of some long overdue maintainence.

Check compressions, if not consistant, witnin 15psi, strip it or dump it. Then check the fuel system from the tank, thru the lines to pump and filters, finally to the carbs. if it then has strong sparks, at the right timing points, it will go on fresh fuel, dont forget good oil.

  7. This is simple - first check for spark then check compression more than likely your carb is dirty and gummed up if you had listed your hp I would have given you a part number 2 rebuild your carb. Also check the fuel tank and lines.... If by chance you have intermittent spark pull the fly wheel and check your points and coils if the points are blue or burnt replace them if the coils are cracked replace them to the points are set at .020 and the coils sit on small blocks that the front of each pick up pad must be even or straight up/down on each pad to make proper clearence for the flywheel.....

  8. A buddy of mine had a similar problem with his, it would run good for a while then quit. He couldn't restart it for about a 1/2 hr. Restart, then quit again. I took a ride with him the 65 mi. the next time he went to his cottage. I went to start it & before doing it opened the gas tank vent & he asked what I was doing. He hadn't opened the vent & it had been vacuum locking the gas tank, boy did he feel silly. It's a possibility. If that's not it, you might have a cracked coil that's shorting out or a clogged fuel filter or if you didn't run Sta-Bil through the fuel system before putting it into storage the carburetor might be gummed up. Then you'll need to clean it & install a rebuild kit. Also, some replacement kits had a neoprene tip on the needle valve that deteriorated after the new oxygenated additives were put into gas several years ago, it would cause the engine to flood-out.   I'd recommend taking it to a marine repair shop to have that done, as it needs to be put in a test tank to properly adjust the carb after the rebuild.
