OK for the past two months i haven't been able to fall asleep. it's because I've been worrying about life. mainly about getting old and my loved ones dying. i understand that this is inevitable but it keeps me up at night. the thing that's the craziest about this is that I'm a high school student! how can i get rid of this problem and start falling asleep?!?!?!?!

any advice would be appreciated!

P.S. I'm COMPLETELY against sleep medication or anti-depressants so if any of you say i have a disorder please tell me how i can overcome this without those things

  1. These are the facts of life.... youre going to get old, youre going to die, things are going to change, you may become sick and not only will this happen to you, but to every other living being that you know and dont know.  Try to meditate on these topics this may lessen the amount of worry that you have on them at bedtime.

Either that or see a doctor.

  2. Dying is not what you believe it to be.

Firstly, one cannot "die" as we are an energy that just changes form back into the spirit when we "die". It is a beautiful experience for all, there is no suffering whatsoever for anyone.

If you are worried about being left without your loved ones, just remember that when they "die", they are on the most exciting and wonderful journey of a "lifetime". Would you willingly part with them on earth if they were on that journey. I have lost a son, but I don't begrudge him his choice to do that, and I LOVE him just the same.

Just LOVE them while they are here, be the best person you can be to them. Don't spend (waste) all your time thinking about when they might not be here - the door is open to them at the moment, don't wait until it closes.

  3. The more you worry about it, the faster it will come. Concern yourself with more realistic ideals that are within grasp. Don't be foolish and throw your life away because of a fear that everybody experiences.

  4. I'm like this too. it was controlling my life to a point. Every time i heard sirens I would call everyone in my family, and I sometimes would make an excuse to call my dad to make sure he answered his cell because i was afraid he died of a heart attack in his sleep ..wow writing this sounds foolish even to myself. You may have a little anxiety, my worrying has calmed down a lot... If yours doesn't talk to your parents so they can get you help or ease your mind a little...try a walk, it helps me!

& your age has nothing to do with it I'm 21!

Good luck. hope you find relief!

  5. Have you tried prayer? Honestly without a pill for it that's the best l  can think of. Maybe relaxation tapes. Or even hypnosis might work... God is the solution for  your anxiety issues even on pills. That's my 2 cents... Good luck! God bless you,

  6. I too am a high school student, and have been in your position before. I'm extremely thanataphobic (fearful of death) and I even worry about my loved ones dying. I would recommend spending a lot of quality time with those who mean a lot to you. That way, you'll have no regrets when the time does come.

As for getting old, again, it's inevitable, but try and enjoy your life as much as you can. Do the things you really want to do, but be safe about your choices. Exercise, eat right (wow, I sound like a health professional, haha) and you'll be able to live longer. Plus, you'll have a much happier life.

    I really hope I helped you !

  7. I can't know what is causing you to worry about growing up or your loved ones dying.  But, what you are experiencing is not uncommon, however, there has to be a reason why you are so infatuated with worrying about such things.  IMO, if you can find a way to sleep comfortably one night then you will begin again to sleep very well.  Sometimes we all need something to help us and there is nothing wrong with that.  Today there are very good light medications that can let you fall asleep without any after affects.  But you should see a dr first and explain what you are going through.  If you want to fight science then you are going to remain in your present condition for a long time, and may never fully get well.  Please try a light sleeping med, and it works and there is nothing to worry about.

  8. Here's nine priceless tips that work like crazy.

1- Stop worrying at night. When insomnia is happening to me it is because " I have million things to solve ". Then I say to myself "Stop, Magdalena. You can't resolve anything at 3 a.m."

2- Instead worrying, count backwards from 200, taking a deep breathe between each number and also visualizing clearly each number.

3- Or count sheep, but you should imagine only sleeping sheep

4- A superb trick is to move your toes of both feet at the same time, up and down, more than 30 times or until you feel tired and want to sleep.

5- Concentrate on "not thinking" pattern. And if comes any thought you gentle say "go away..."

6- To avoid insomnia, convince your spouse to give you a massage on full body before bedtime. It works wonderful. If not, even a scalp massage can be a big help.

    7-Sleep on your back.

8- If you wake up in middle of night and can't sleep, get up and do something non stimulating. Go back to bed when you feel tired.

9-Yawn four-five times. It will be a signal for your brain that is time to sleep.

    I hope I helped you a bit.

  9. Sounds like some form of anxiety. Anxiety is worry about the future, which is what you are doing. Everyone has anxiety to some degree, however it becomes a problem when it interferes with your life, which is what it also seems to be doing. It sounds like you understand that the thoughts you have are extreme but you can't seem to stop.

I would definately recommend seeing a Psychologist, school counsellor and do yoga (Yoga does wonders for sleep). Don't be afriad to ask your parents and school counsellor to help you out with doing this. Drugs like caffeine, nicotine and alcohol are terrible for sleep, dont drink caffeine after 12pm.

For now, on a sheet of paper you could write reasons for and against worrying about your distressing thoughts. Based on these reasons, come up with a more balanced way of looking at your concerns. Also, it seems like you doubt your ability to cope with these situations, so developing coping skills is important, look at your strengths and start taking steps to develop coping skills e.g. accessing social support.

Also, (please note that this might not work for you!!!) but when I was about 19 I had insomnia and took St Johns Wort (a herb you get from vitamin stores) in about 3 weeks I easily began to fall asleep, and stopped taking it after a couple of months, and I still had good sleep, as my mind was trained to sleep again.
