  1. I would say to give it a shot.  Really, you can get UP TO 7.1 channels on a Blu-Ray disc.  Your receiver will probably decode it as 5.1 channels.  Also, Some discs come in Dolby True HD and DTS-HD.  These are 7.1 channel tracks and you may not even be able to hear anything.

  2. Yes. A 5.1 home theater system is capable of playing 7.1 movies, but not with 7.1 sound. The signal is mixed down into 5.1 channels from 7.1, so although it is not full 7.1, it is surround sound nonetheless.

  3. Yes, it just won't be in 7.1, only 5.1. Conversly,if you had a 7.1 system and a 5.1 movie, it would also, only play in 5.1.

  4. Blu-Ray's Standard audio format is Dolby Digital. Meaning that all movies must have a Dolby Digital Track. Most also have an uncompressed or HD audio track now but all you have to do is select the DD track or set the player to default to DD.

  5. No. A 5.1 will only play up to 5.1. You will need a 7.1 system to be able to play 7.1 blu ray or otherwise.
