Can 7.1 home theater receivers typically support a 6.1 speaker setup?

My 6.1 receiver is on its last legs, so I'm researching for my next receiver. There isn't as much selection for 6.1 systems, but I don't intend to change my speaker setup. So, I'm curious if 7.1 systems can convert to 6.1 output typically. Are there any features I need to look for in order to do this?

Just buy a new 7.1 receiver that supports some new HD sound formats ( DTS - HD MA and Dolby True HD ) for future proof.

yes they can convert.  6.1 is not needed now adays.  it is just 5.1 with 2 center channel speakers instead of 1.  go for the 7.1 and you will not be dissapointed.
