I have an Acer Extensa 5420 with a DVD-RW disk drive that I bought about 5 months ago. Whenever I try to pop in a DVD movie, the drive fails to detect the disk. It makes that whirring sound like it is trying to read it, but its shuts down about 5 seconds later. What I want to know is can my Laptop view DVD Movies or am I only able to burn to disks. Any help or answers would be greatly appreciated

  1. your drive may be bad

    it should read all dvds

  2. Yes it can read dvds and write them as well.. Check your drivers... In XP do this by going into My Computer, Right-click the DVD Drive, Properties, Hardware tab, select your DVD Drive from the list, driver tab, driver details and see if any of them have a yellow ! beside them.. If so, download the drivers from the Acer Website... Also, make sure you have the DVD Software your laptop came with installed...

If none of these work take the drive in to be looked at, you should still have warranty on your laptop

    Good Luck!
