Can A Doctor's pregnancy test (urine test) ever be wrong?

I was in the doctor's office for abdominal pain on Aug. 7th and they tested me and it was negative. I had to get a ct scan that day and then an ultrasound that day as well and it turned out I have a rather large ovarian cyst. I have another appt. on the 21st to see if I need to get it removed. Well I am now a tad over a week late. What are the chancing I am pregnant? Could the cyst be throwing my period off? I don't have period symptoms. Should I retest or wait until I go to the OBGYN on thursday?

I know, I know if I really want to know take another test but what are the chances that this cyst threw off my entire cycle or that I might be pregnant?

It wasn't a blood test it was a urine test. I am actually hoping I am we are on the if it happens it happens routine and my bf gets excited every month when I am late.

  1. The first person who answered is wrong and I am proof of that.

Dr.'s offices don't use any fancy urine test, they use the same stick thing everyone else does, they just supposedly have a professional preforming the test.

When I was pregnant with my first two children both tests at the Dr. office (urine tests) came back negative, I was two weeks late on my period and they did blood tests and both were positive.

So yes a urine test could definately give false negatives'. False positives I don't think so as much.

Your ovarian cyst could be throwing off your period. I would wait until you go back in, because if you haven't started by then just have them re-test you. Good luck.

  2. Urine tests are NOT always correct.  If you take it too soon then it won't be accurate.  Children are a gift, and these people are bitter.  I would wait to re test.  If you are prego then you will still be on thursday:)

A blood test would be more accurate:)

    Good luck, and nice hat:)

  3. yes there can be a error in any test but it is uncommon!

but i would think that the pending cyst could be warring and stress full and so that in itself can alter your menstrual times.

    Good luck

  4. Yes, a urine test can show a false negative.  If you test too early and/or there isn't enough hormone in your urine, it could come up negative.  Same goes for the doctor's office.

I would retest next week, or ask for a blood test when you go in for the surgery.  The cyst could be affecting you in terms of stress (and since it sounds like you've been late before with no pregnancy, it could be a repeat of that).  I don't think anyone can answer "what are the chances" that you're pregnant since that depends on so, so many factors that we have no knowledge of.

  5. Well I was indeed pregnant when they gave me a urine test and said no. YET it was positive after 5 min. They want to see a positive right away. I had drank so much water it was diluted urine. so, in your case, You can be pregnant too, I also have a cyst and it has not bothered me. But get a blood test to confirm a pregnancy, it the only true way to go!

  6. I've had 3 large ovarian cysts and 3 surgerys for them, and everytime I knew something was wrong when my period would start being late, so yes the cysts can through off your period, especially if it is trapping the egg and you are not ovulating.

  7. The cyst will not throw off your cycle. But, you should not have had a catscan if you even had the remote idea that you were pregnant. Chances are that you are not. Yes, the doctors urine test can be wrong, just like ANY other test the lowest level of hCG it can pick up is 20iU.

mememe-  A urine test is OFTEN wrong. Who told you that they were never wrong? Good thing you changed it :)

  8. Urine tests are rarely wrong. Especially if they did an ultrasound. I doubt you are pregnant.

BTW: Don't go getting pregnant just because you like seeing your boyfriend excited. That is not the right reason to have a baby. In 5 or 10 years will he still be excited, or will he have moved on and left you to take care of your child alone?
