Can A Female Play Gavroche?

Les Miserables is coming to my high school next year, and I want to try out for the part of Gavroche, but I'm a girl. Can a girl play this part?

Theoretically anyone could play anyone. The character doesn't have any love interests, so that wouldn't be a problem. Technically, directors are not allowed, by virtue of their licensing agreements, to change the gender of characters, but many do. The character has traditionally always been a boy, starting from the Victor Hugo novel through any productions I've ever heard of, but I would not like to discourage you from trying.

Your director might also consider casting you as a boy, if your features allow.
