Im actually not sure anymore because soon a law will be passed that American citizens must have a passport to get into Canada now.

It probably depends on your nationality.

My husband is Canadian (I am American) and neither of us needs a Visa.

The link below lists the citizens who would need a visa to visit.

EDIT:  Lower in the page it states that the following makes you exempt:

persons lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence who are in possession of their alien registration card (Green card) or can provide other evidence of permanent residence;
