Can Americans carry guns according to the 2nd Amendment?

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Since America has a full time professional army and no longer maintains a Miltia to defend themselves against British Invasion. Should the right to bear arms still be in force? Or has the purpose of the 2nd amendment now expired?

New Hampshire; Any citizen who is of age is entitled to carry a pistol if he or she so desired as long as it is fully exposed or 'Cowboy style'.  You are required to have a permit if you wish to carry the pistol concealed.

The right to keep and bear arms is not limited as a protection against foreign enemies, but as a protection against domestic enemies as well.  The word militia from the latin refers to 'all citizens' sharing an equal responsibility to band together in the common defense of our failie, friends and community.

the 2nd amendment has not been allowed to keep up with the times and therefore you think it is worthless. the 2nd amendment does not refer to guns, it refers to arms.  Arms refers to cannons, artillery, guided missiles, bombs etc, these should be allowed to be owned by private citizens and companies.  The government however is scared to death of a legitimate coup so it limits private citizens to primarily semi-automatic low caliber firearms.

Yes we can carry guns, but so do the criminals, usually stolen! Get rid of those, and then we wouldn't have to defend ourselves! It will never happen in our lifetime though!

No it has not expired. It's not the job of the government to protect me. I will do that. Besides what about protection from the government? As far as carrying a gun goes it all depends on local laws here. It's OK to do so in my town and I could always get a CCP but I don't feel that I need one.
