Can Americans laugh at themselves?

I recently posted a couple of questions about the Borat~ film, asking what it has to say about life in America. I was surprised to see how many scathing responses I received. This makes me wonder, do Americans take themselves too seriously?

Have they lost the capacity to laugh at themselves?

i think some people have.

i mean, one time i printed out my letter on my envelope by accident and i was laughing really hard :)

but yeah, some people are really just too serious

no i laugh at my self everyday or every other day i am a major klutz and some very stupid things that i am proud to laugh at

Of course, especially the brighter ones;  you know, the ones who don't watch NASCAR, and hunt small mammals with automatic weapons.

Also, i've heard it said, vis a vis humor, that somewhat more evolved ETs watch our activities down here, like we watch cartoons.  They think we must be kidding  :))
