Can Andres Villas Boas handle the stars at Chelsea?
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 manager Andres Villas Boas is set to replace Carlo Ancelotti as manager at English Premier League side Chelsea. He comes to Stamford Bridge after proving himself with the Portuguese giants, leading them to the Portuguese Supercup, Primeira Liga,
Portuguese Cup and the UEFA Europe League.
He might not have the amount of experience most top managers have, but he is an excellent tactician, some may say even better than his former teacher Jose Mourinho. With the existing http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 squad, he can be expected to do wonders, maybe even lead the London
side to their first ever UEFA Champions League title.
However, that is only if the stars at Stamford Bridge cooperate with him. The players at Chelsea have created a sort of mafia, which is one of the reasons why the Blues have had six managers since Roman Abramovich took over in 2003.
Sadly, the players at Chelsea know when to get rid of a manager they are not particularly fond of, as was the case with Jose Mourinho, Luiz http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Felipe-c13510 Scolari and most recently Carlo Ancelotti. All three managers were sacked since they were not delivering the
desired results.
Even though Mourinho and Ancelotti started off well, leading the Blues to trophies in their first season at the club, they both fell out of favour soon. Ancelotti did so in just two seasons, while Mourinho managed to remain with the Blues for three and a
half years.
When the likes of Mourinho and Ancelotti couldn’t control the players at Chelsea, it makes one wonder how Andres Villas Boas will do at the club. The Portuguese manger is only 33-years-old, one of the youngest managers to have achieved as much as Villas
Boas has achieved in his short career as a manager.
Second choice goal keeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Henrique-c16069 Hilario is 35 years old, older than Andres Villas Boas. Awkward.
Midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Didier-Drogba-c11044 are both 33 years old, just a few months younger than their new manager, who is yet to be officially confirmed.
It is the senior players who will prove to be a handful for Villas Boas, the players who are used to getting their way. It is said that when Jose Mourinho left the club during the 2007-2008 season, it was the players who made most of the decisions and Avram
Grant was merely a puppet manager.
If that was indeed the case, then the players did fairly well to reach the final of the UEFA Champions League against Premier League rivals Manchester United. Unfortunately for them, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/John-Terry-c18895 made the ill fated decision of taking the final, possible match
winning penalty in the penalty shoot-out and in his premature excitement, slipped and missed the penalty kick.
This just goes to show that Chelsea need a manager like Guus Hiddink. Even though his stay with Chelsea was a short one, just three months, he led an extremely out of form side to an FA Cup finish. The Dutch manager was arguably the only manager who successfully
managed to control the stars at Chelsea, and as much as the management as Chelsea denies it, he was their first choice to take over as manager.
With Andres Villas Boas expected to be announced as the new Chelsea manager, one can only wish the Portuguese manager luck. It is not his tactical genius that is under question, but his ability to handle the difficult bunch at Stamford Bridge.
If the stars at Chelsea wish to win silverware and more important the Champions League, they have to start working with the manager and not challenge his decisions, as has been the case in the past.
