I bought a small used hot tub and I'm not sure how to maintain it. I bought a start up kit of chemicals and test strips. I added some chemicals last night and tested today. Everything seems okay except not enough chlorine. I have bromine tablets that go in a floater, is that the same?? I'm so confused and the Home Depot where I bought the chemicals had no idea. Please help if you own a hot tub and can tell me how to go about getting the chemicals right and correcting them if they go off.

  1. OMG, please be careful!  If you mix them incorrectly you could really hurt yourself.

Please contact someone in your area that does this professionally so you can learn (look in craigslist).

Basically, you'll need to get a test kit.  The reason is that adding chemicals is used to kill stuff in the water.  But if the chemicals are still there in high quantities it will burn your skin or cause you serious problems.  So, test the water first before you enter.

Bromine should be enough so you should not need to use both Chlorine and Bromine.  Mixing them is not very good.

Chlorine is used to "shock" treat the water before use and can take a few days for it to be ready.

Bromine is daily use to keep bacteria from buildling up in the water.  yes, it usually goes in the floater!  But remove the floater from the water while you're in the tub.

  2. There is a bunch of stuff I could tell you to do, but personally I learn much better by watching someone do it.  Check out the video below and they will go through it step-by-step.

    Hope this helps!
