Can Aspergers affect learning something like java?

i just ask because. 2 years ago we had to learn Visual Basic at college, and i found that incredibly easy. The method we used to learn was basically a brief explaination of what the program was to accomplish.

The code for the program (with comments gallore)

And then a final explaination explaining how the entire thing came togehter.

Now that we're learning java the lecturer we have is using a ... much different approach, he's basically split the one code. into several smaller commented pieces, and put c**p loads of examples between each bit of code. (i'll put an example of this in the additional details bit) and no matter how many times i read and re-read this i can't grasp what even one line of his code means or is meant to do.

I'm currently failing / have failed this unit. Which is annoying but if i can find a way to catch up (i'm good at this stuff if its taught in the right fashion) i can do the makeup work during summer.

  1. It certainly could be your aspergers that is affecting your learning.  Perhaps your brain registers information in a certain way (logically processing the information).  Now for some reason, this professor has thrown your thought processes into a loop.  I would definitely discuss this with the teacher and bring past examples of your good grades to show him.  Is there someone else who was in your previous classes who "gets" what is being taught now and who you could perhaps have a study group or tutoring session with?

  2. Asperger doesn't have any thing with it. You have to make sure, you're interested in learning JAVA. So, you'd accomplich it. My son is Autistic is just 3 years old & he learned to use basic computer when he was just 20 months old. He really is into high tech. He takes my cell & change my ringtones, download music & videos. it's a big WOW for a 3 years old boy.. I learned I may have Asperger when my son was diagnosed with Autism. And guess what??? I'm an Electronic Engineer with 2 Master Degrees who speak 2 language... So, I just learned that people into the ASD really masterize what they  are really interested to learn... So get yourself together & look for something that make caugth your attention on Java...

  3. It could be Aspergers but by the same token it could be the lecturer.  All lecturers are supposed to use many different methods of teaching to accommodate different learning styles. Called differentiation, it is one of the basics of teaching qualifications (FETC & Cert Ed in the UK) which your lecturer should have.

Also if the lecturer is worth his/her salt, they should have an awareness of Aspergers and other aspects of Autism.  It affects different people in different ways and in varying degrees.  I would have a word with the welfare depatment or special needs co-ordinator at your college who may be able to enlighten the lecturer or help in some other way.

Their are a great many people about who have this 'condition' many more than statistics show because it costs the education authority a fair bit to have sufferers assessed and/or statemented.  Many who only have mild symptoms don't get statemented and therefore get no help from special needs people in schools particularly if they seem to be progressing in educational terms.  However, this leaves many - who have problems interacting with their peers and other social skills - at a disadvantage and also are not part of the statistics.  I am still not convinced that triple vaccination has no part in it's causes.

  5. in response to comment # 1...bill gates was never formally diagnosed with aspergers.  he is suspected of having it.
