    There are many spoken dialects in Austria and the proper German ("Hochdeutsch") is learned almost as a second language for many - since it has even a different grammar than the spoken dialects.

  3. Austrians speak German, it's their native language. However the dialect is distinctive, something like a Georgia boy talking to a New Yorker.  The Germans always know when the speaker is an Austrian

  4. Yes, it´s the common language in Austria. There are different dialects of the German language, Austrians use some different expressions for some words - but it´s the same language!!

    The Austrian dialect is very similar to the Bavarian dialect in Southern Germany

    I should know best - I´m from Austria!!
