  1. BLU-RAY will not work on an ordinary player, you need a BLU-RAY player.

Movies on BLU-RAY are full high-definition and use up a lot of space.

  2. No... Blu-Ray (and also HD-DVD) are totally new formats.

They may be on disks exactly the same physical shape and dimensions as DVDs (and CDs), but the data on them is as different as CDs are to DVDs.

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are designed to hold high definition movies... these are often 4 times sharper than even DVDs and so a high def movie takes up WAY more space than a DVD can handle. That's why Blu-Ray and HD-DVD hold so much data... becasue they have to.

A standard DVD player is only designed to read standard DVDs... so a Blu-Ray of HD-DVD will not work in a standard player.

You also need to have a HD TV to get any benefit... if your TV is not HD, then  even if you feed it an HD signal, you will still get a low definition image on screen... so no better than a normal DVD.

Right now, if you have a standard TV and DVD player, it's REALLY expensive to switch up to High Def... you would need a new HD TV, a HD-DVD player (or Blu-Ray player) and of course the new disks themselves are more expensive than DVDs too.

Best to wait a couple more years till the new technology is more mainstream and the prices come down... the good news is, most HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players will also play normal DVDs... just not the other way round... so you won't have to buy all your movies again.
