Can Blu-Ray machines play normal DVDs?

I have a number of regular DVD's and don't want to replace the if I don't have to.

  1. I have a Playstation 3 and it plays Blu-Ray, DVD, and Music Cd's. I think the only difference is the file capacity of the disc. Blu-Ray discs hold 80GB while DVD's hold only 8GB. I don't think it will play HDDVD though.
