  1. Of course. And grgurmrwhatever has got it right: CDs are less affected by scratches than DVDs and DVDs are less affected than Blu-Ray because of the size of the bits engraved in the disc and the increased difficulty to read them with accuracy.

  2. yes

  3. yes they do scratch.  The industry really did us a lack of service by not standardizing cartridge-based discs which would have made them more rugged in a consumer environment.

So be careful, unless you like to buy your movies twice.

  4. Yes...

  5. Yes they can. They do have an anti-scratch coating that makes them less succeptible to minor/typical scratches... but it's of course not invincible. Anything can be scratched.

You really need also be more carefull about not scratching a Blu-Ray disc compared to a DVD.. because a scratch on a Blu-Ray disc can do more irreversable harm then on a DVD.. but again... it's harder to lightly scratch a Blu-Ray. The reason it's more dangerous to get a scratch on a Blu-Ray disc is because the layer of plastic between you and data is alot thinner then on a DVD (or HD-DVD). That is why they have the anti-scratch hardcoating... it NEEDED it or else they'd be to fragile for the general public.
