I'm planning to buy a home theater system and I want it to be able to play blue ray and regular or hd DVDs. Itd be ridiculous for blue ray players to only play blue ray DVDs. So does anyone know about DVD players that play both ?

  1. i think

  2. yes they can. You just can't play Blue Ray or HD in a regular one.

  3. there is a player by samsung that will play both. it is a little expensive where i found it but there is such a thing.

  4. standard blu-ray dont play hd dvds. As they are opposing formats, seems like blu-ray has won the commercial battle with most major film studios backi the format. If you have to choose one then go for blu ray.

See link, LG have released a hybrid that plays both.

  5. Blu-ray players play standard DVD's you can buy them that play HDDVD to but the HDDVD format has died a death, they no longer produce them and they will no longer be marketed. Blu-ray won the battle.

  6. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are two different formats and can't support each other's  disc. But they DO support standard DVDs. I have seen combos; Blu-Ray and HD DVD in one unit- but are still very expensive to buy. Now that Blu-Ray won the high-definition war (Toshiba dropped HD DVD), prices should SLOWLY drop. Your best bet is get a PS3.
