  1. Well you can change the filter!! You can't recondition them though

  2. Brita filters use activated charcoal.  Once the filters "go bad" or get fully saturated, the charcoal has to either be disgarded or re-processed.  Since activated charcoal is cheaper to replace than to re-process, it's possible, but not financially feesible to recondition them.  Some commercial grade charcole filters do offer discounts to ship back expired canisters, but all they do is dump out the old charcoal, clean out the canister, and put new charcoal in it.

  3. Maybe. It would have to involve reversing the water flow so that all of the contaminates that go stuck in the filter go back out the way they came in. It would also have to be with pure water, meaning distilled. Anything else in it and it defeats the purpose of the attempt. It should also include some amount of pressure, like the pressure in your house pipes.

Is it that important anyhow. They only improve taste and odor anyhow. They offer nothing for actual health benefits as filtering goes.
