Can Bubba Watson shine at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf?
By virtue of winning the Masters Tournament this year, Bubba Watson also earned a berth at the 30th PGA Grand Slam of Golf.
The PGA Grand Slam of Golf is the most difficult tournament in terms of the qualification criteria. A player must win a major event in order to get a one-time chance to play the season-ending showcase event.
Thereafter, the player needs to win again if he wants to be a part of the event any other time.
Therefore, Watson now has his first chance to record a blistering performance in the event where he will be contending against only three other players, this year’s major champions.
However, his recent stats do not support his chances in the event. When he recorded his first ever major title victory, he had then a stunning form on the PGA Tour.
He came off with two second-place finishes in a row at the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship and Tavistock Cup.
Moreover, he tied for the fourth position at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard, prior to defeating Louis Oosthuizen on the second extra hole of the playoffs at Augusta National.
However, the story is completely different this time, as he is not enjoying the best of his forms currently. He has not been able to impress his fans since he won the Masters.
Right after his victory, he preferred to stay away from the game and spent plenty of time with his family. His first appearance after the Masters came at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where he tied for the 18th position.
Thereafter, he once again announced his absence from each of the PGA Tour events scheduled before the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance.
This also confirmed his absence from the golf course for a complete one month. Moreover, he missed the cut when he returned to action at Memorial.
The following tournament, the second major tournament of the season, US Open, also witnessed him miss the cut for the second time in a row.
That was a time when he was highly criticized by the golf commentators for not focusing on his game, rather taking the game of golf as a piece of cake. He then proved his critics wrong with a quick comeback at the Travelers Championship, where he tied for
the second position.
Yet, he failed to maintain consistency afterwards and also took a month off prior to the start of the Open Championship.
By and large, it is observed that Watson does not play too much golf on the PGA Tour that drags him out of his form most of the times.
He does have the ability to bounce back at any stage of the game and he has proved it at times when required. However, inconsistency and non-serious attitude can never take him to the peak, which is a dream of every golf player.
On the other hand, the other three major winners have all performed really well throughout the season whether they play on the PGA Tour or the European Tour.
Therefore, it is quite expected that Watson will have serious troubles in getting his opponents down at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf this year.
The only advantage he will have during the event is the number of opponents. He will not have to beat the field of 100 or more players. In fact, he will have to outshine only three other players.
Therefore, luck can also play a vital role in his success in the event. Otherwise, his attitude towards the game is not going to allow him to become the first time winner of the event this year.
