  1. While Cajun French differs from mainstream French after more than 200 years of seperate evolution it is still understood.


  2. Cajun is the language spoken by the descendants of the french people that came to the New World in the XVIIth. century. (Cajun  comes from the word ACADIE...which referred to the part of Canada they settled in. Afterwards many moved south to Louisiana taking their language and culture with them). As such the language remained rather archaic.

    Whereas the french language spoken in France itself developed and modernised through the ensuing centuries...

    The accent and many words are quite different, but yes, it is possible for both cajuns and french to communicate, although not fluently...
