Can Canadians find work in bars/restaurants/tourism for short periods without a work permit in Barcelona?

I'm looking for people who may have been successful finding work in Spain without a work permit, temporary jobs in tourism/bars/restaurants for a couple months, part-time. Were you paid cash? Is it impossible to find this kind of work as a non-European? I'm traveling to Spain in May for the summer.
