Can Caroline Hedwall win the UNIQA Ladies Golf Open again?
UNIQA Ladies Golf Open is just around the corner and all eyes are on the LET players who will play in the prestigious event.
One player who gets special mention is the Swedish player Caroline Hedwall, who won the 2011 edition of the event. The number one question that everyone asks is, will she be able to repeat the same performance this year?
Last year, Hedwall shot through the leaderboard and stunned everyone with her excellent game in the final round of the event. She had a clear lead that she maintained throughout the round.
At the end, she won by a wide margin of four strokes. Her closest rival was the French star Caroline Afonso. After the match, Hedwall appeared very confident and said that she enjoyed the tournament and was proud of her first place in the event.
This year, however, things do not look so rosy for the 23-year-old player. At the start of 2012, she played in the two LET events with some success.
She stood 12th in the ISPS Handa Australian Open and 11th in the Gold Coast RACV Australian Ladies Masters. So far, she has failed to perform well in any of the recent tournaments.
She missed the cut in four of the recent LPGA events. These events were: U.S. Women's Open, Walmart NW Arkansas Championship Presented by P&G, Manulife Financial LPGA Classic and Wegmans LPGA Championship.
This performance is hardly in keeping with her normal game. She is well known as a committed golfer who is very partial to winning the tournaments she plays in. She played a wonderful 283 points in the Kia Classic, held in March.
Similarly, she shared the sixth place in the LPGA minor, RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup. These events were held early this year and showed that Hedwall is in great form.
Things went wrong somewhere in May when she played in the Sybase Match Play Championship and finished in the 33rd place.
So what are her chances of defending her title this year? Given the data, Hedwall is not playing the game she is known for. She will have to improve substantially in order to face the world’s best golfers in the UNIQA Ladies Golf Open.
