It could, but since 8 by 8 has been used for generations successfully, perhaps only a new different type of game would be better.

I can only assume you want to play on a 16x16 game board to increase the complexity of the game? If this true.. you should just play SHOGI.

In it's history, variations to the size and shape of the board have happened.  (There is a Byzantine variation with a torus [donut shaped - round with a hole] shaped board.)

Anything is possible.

I would say that the 8x8 board by would be the best unless you can find someone that has used the 16x16 board without problems. But I would say that oyu should stick with the 8x8 board
