Question:

Can Clavamox cause Diarrhea???

One of my cats has diarrhea. I have 4 cats, and I haven't isolated the one that I believe has diarrhea yet, so I'm not 100% sure that she has it. But what makes me believe it is her and not the others is because she was put on Clavamox a few days ago for a suspected URI (recently adopted shelter cat, so it can be anything really). All of my cats are shelter cats, and I've fostered some cats that came from bad shelters, so I've given Clavamox before but never had any problems. However, Taylor is 12, the oldest cat I've had yet. So basically, what I'm asking, is could the clavamox be causing the diarrhea? I will TRY and isolate her sometime tonight and try to see if she is the one with the diarrhea, and I will be calling my vet on Monday. Are there any other meds that could be used? And if so, what are they?

(I have heard that Clavamox can be rough for some cats, so no need to tell me that.)

And this is probably a REALLY dumb question, but... Should I discontinue giving Taylor the clavamox? I'm guessing yes, so I guess I kinda answered my own question lol! oops

Thanks in advance to anyone that answers this with good advice!!!!!

  1. YES!  Clavamox can indeed cause diarrhea in some cats - just like people, some have reactions to antibiotics.  One of my cats has the same reaction, and he can no longer take it.  Call the vets office, and see if you should take her off safely (I could with mine), and pick up a different antibiotic on Monday.  Make sure this information is put in the medical file, so that in the future she isn't accidentally prescribed it.

  2. It can cause it but so can an infection'. As long as your cat is eating i would continue using it/

You can get some slippery elm for diarrhea or if it is hairballs get some 'vet basis'

    Thanks for saving a life

You cannot stop and restart antibiotics. You would have to start over again and give them for the full time period. Starting and stopping also builds resistence to them

  3. Yes...Clavamox can cause diarrhea. If you read the package insert it talks about C. diff which can cause diarrhea. If it were my cat, I would stop the Clavamox until I talked to the vet, but that's just my opinion.

  4. Our 1 yr. old cat has been on Clavamox.  His stool did get softer than normal on occasion, but not runny diarrhea. Since it's an antibiotic, in theory it can cause intestinal upset. Keep the cat on the Clavamox and give her bland wet food.  If she stops eating and drinking, then you'll obviously have to get her to a clinic asap.

I'm sure you're not giving her any milk products, so it might be her age and the dosage.  How bad are her URI symptoms? Could you halve the dose until you contact your vet?

  5. Yes, Clavamox can cause diarrhea. In my cat it caused vomiting. I would make sure this cat is definitely the one with diarrhea first, before stopping the Clavamox.

There are other antibiotics that the vet can dispense for UTI.
