I want to know if something like the Apple TV would work on a normal non HD Television. It Requires component, 5 cables, but I only have a 3 cable connection on my older television. I also do not want to buy any extra pieces, because I am pretty sure there is a combination to avoid using all five slots.

  1. Cables that are red and white are usally intended for audio not video. Video cables are coaxial in design and provide an isolation factor between the conductors. Audio cable such as the one's usally red or white are simply cheap stranded wire  and will not carry video well.

  2. of course you CAN! they are extremely similar (assuming it is a good brand) . if they are all the same gauge they will work just fine. just make sure not to cross them. a good way is to connect the yellow to green, red to red, and blue to white. it will get you by for now, especially on smaller displays.

  3. No.  You must use all component video ports (red, green, blue).  Apple TV doesn't support composite or s-video video cables.

Apple TV will only work on EDTV and HDTVs.  But, it will not support SDTVs because the lowest resolution that Apple TV can output is 480p.  SD is 480i.
