Can DSL knock out your land phone completely?

I know bad filters can cause static, but no one can call us and we can't call out. It has recently rained for two days. Maybe it's the weather?

  1. Typically, DSL Internet service should not cause any problems with your telephone service other than noise on line.

And when filters are good and properly connected, there should be no problems at all.

In your case, rain could very well be the culprit.  If it has been raining a lot and your problems occur only during or shortly after rain or heavy rains, then there is a good possibility.

Rain can cause problems with buried phone lines.  Typically it will not cause any problems.  But, if your phone line is old or has been recently damaged by digging, or the cable has been pierced by underground rock, etc., then water can enter the cable and cause noise, static, and worst case is shorting out the circuit thus killing your line.

I'm assuming you don't have DSL service as well as PSTN phone loss.  If that's the case, the outside underground line is bad.

If you have DSL signal, but no PSTN phone signal, then that is very strange.  Either case requires a call to the phone company "repair service".

(I'm assuming you already determined the phones and lines in the house are OK and not faulty)

  2. your line is wet

it should clear up in a few days

  3. You probably have a short some where in one of the phone wires going to a phone. Most likely got wet. If you know where the connection point is to all your phone wires, remove them one by one and you will be able to find the bad wire. If this doesn't take care of it. It most likely is something you will need to call the telephone company for. Also it may be a bad phone but it is unlikely if you said you have had a bunch of rain.
