Question:

Can Developed Countries Save the Poor Ones?

Specifically with regards to global warming... replacing technologies, paying for damages, etc.

I'm not interested in what's "right" or "wrong" to do such as any self-righteous feel-good blaming rants about the morality (there's a religious section on YA for that), just the mechanics of how it could (or would not) work.

For reference, I find this YouTube video very interesting:

Although it's about immigration, the points about global population and growth seem relevant to the discussion of whether or not a few people who currently manage keep themselves above the poverty/hunger level can really solve the problems in the countries that haven't reached that point by now.

Is the problem in poor countries really global warming, or will it boil down to poverty/hunger and population carrying capacity? How many hundreds of billions (or trillions) have been spent on the problem over the past decades, and with what results?

  1. Right now there are homeless people sleeping in boxes under lower wacker drive in Chicago..............Lets begin with our own nations failing economy and problems first before going abroad as world saviors..........our own system needs fixing first before it REALLY gets out of control.

  2. Look at United States. We are trying to 'save' the poor countries in the middle east and we were ALREADY becoming poorer. I think China or maybe Europe are the only countries able to do this, without bankrupting themselves.

But like I always say, fix yours before you fix someone else's. May sound harsh, but truth.

  3. People want to eat.   If we can show them a better way to grow their foods at no cost to them, they will probably do it.   If they don't have to walk for miles to chop down the nearest tree for firewood, but instead can use a home made solar cooker built with a couple flattened cans they probably would rather do that.    They cannot afford, nor do they want a fuel cell powered vehicle or high efficiency air conditioning.   If we try to sell them stuff that would be sold to help the environment in developed countries it won't do anyone any good.    They live with a completely different mindset than most here  can even comprehend.   Someone in poverty here would be rich there, yet would be unable to function well.

  4. Wealthy countries can help up to a point. In some cases, poor people are kept that way by corruption in their governments. If we administer the aid directly, we can do more than if we simply turn over huge bags of grain to other countries.

  5. Yes, but Environmental Groups oppose the works that can save people arround the world.

Xenophobic people are too large for immigration to be made easier in the United States (a nation that has plenty of room for even more people).

Protectionists people want to keep Globalization from implementing free trade arround the world both in the US and in the Nations that we trade with.

  6. Yes, they CAN.

  7. No and I see no reason why they should even try.

  8. Even some of the poorest countries have been around for thousands of years. If they have not figured it out by now what makes you think you can teach them? Trying to stop global warming is like trying to swim to the moon. Try to consider how many times global warming has occurred in history then think about how many cars were present.
