I'm interested in obtaining surround sound for my 360 and wondering if the analog audio (red and white) cable will transmit the Dolby Pro Logic signal or will I need to find a Surround sound system that has inputs for other audio cable options?

  1. no..... if you have a 5.1 channel home theater , when using dolby pro logic, your system is actually only use the 3 front speakers and since is surround it will sound like it's using 5.1......mostly times they use dolby pro logic for old movies that have been remastered or brought to dvd for the very first time since they came out...like 80's movies.....

  2. What type of Surround Speaker System u have? 5.1?

What all inputs can be given to your speaker system? just 2 channel (r+l) analog audio or has digital co-axial or optical inputs?

Does your speaker system has any surround enhancers ( to upmix 2channel to 5.1 channel ) like Dolby Prologic and Dolby Prologic II.

The L and R analog out of 360 will surely have all the channels embedded into it. All 5.1 channels will be downmixed to these 2 channels. All u need is a good surround processor like Prologic II, to up convert again the 2 channels to 5.1.

Since this process include downmixing and then upmixing the  6 channels, there may be noises.

So for getting the exact 5.1 channel effect as encoded in the game u have to transfer the audio signal digitally from 360 to ur receiver/ speaker system through digital co-axial or optical

cables, and ur receiver should support these digital inputs.

But a receiver with analog stereo inputs and a prologic II decoder can be loyal upto 80 percent in producing surround sound.

  3. Yes, ProLogic was designed for L/R analog cables or sources.

But you have to have a receiver that decodes ProLogic, but this should not be too hard as this is quite common.

    (qp4rts was actually correct)

ProLogic is stereo, but the sound engineers can encode things:

    - A shift from L/R can let a pro-logic receiver strip off a voice track that is ususally sent to a center speaker.

    - Another shift can let a pro-logic receiver strip off another track which is sent to 2 rear speakers. It's the same sounds sent to both, but it is a rear channel.

But if you just have an old stereo - you get all the sounds out of the L/R speakers.  Thats the beauty of ProLogic - its backwards compatible with stereo TV, VCR's.

  4. Pro-logic is the only Dolby surround available on the analog audio outputs.  It only produces a single channel surround usually fed to two speakers at the rear.  As such, you will receive only a limited surround effect.  Dolby Digital 5.1 is only available on digital audio outputs (optical, coax or HDMI), and includes separate left and right rear channels, a center channel and a subwoofer (LFE) channel.  However, the source program must have Dolby Digital encoded in it.  Some sources only have pro-logic, in which case the digital output will provide that.  More advanced digital processors for Dolby will enhance the pro-logic output to give the effect of more channels.
