Question:

Can Dried up Bore be used for RWH & how could it be used for recharging the ground Water?

In My Colonny many bore's used for ground water lifting have truned dry this summer. Groung water level is going deper & deeper. Simply thought if such dried bores could be used for rain water Harvesting, then how to proceed about that so that I make other families in my colony & around aware of the same , so that Rain water should be utilised to recharge the parching & dring ground.

  1. This is a good idea.

If the casing is intact and the original plumbing in place, all that will be needed is to filter the rain water above ground and allow it to flow by gravity into the bore.

It may even be possible to arrange an annular feeder at the top and allow the water to flow down the walls.

The problem is that there is no free lunch. The whole set up may cost about INR 5000(USD 125) for no immediate benefit to the one spending. In fact, there may not be any benefit at all. It may be difficult to get people to do it.

  3. I think you need to look to "rainwater harvesting" instead of "rainwater filling", which is what you are trying to do to your bore wells.

Rainwater filling has turned out to be impractical and unsound for the environment.  Bad on both counts and potentially damaging to the area (humans and wildlife) for decades.

The link below shows how rainwater harvesting can be coupled with solar efforts that eliminate costs and help make the effort sustainable and practical on the long term view.

This site also discusses how to take the rainwater harvesting out to the community level.  I think this might be the best solution for your troubles -- that is economic and has little impact on the environment.

Good luck!  Keep us posted on what you decide to do there.

  4. Depends on how much open space you have available. Normally building a small pond or lake and channeling all rain water into it does a lot to restore ground water. Adequate tree cover around the ponds help minimize evaporation due to sun.

Digging trenches , CCT's (Contour trenches) also help retain rain water and increase percolation thus putting more water into ground. On hilly areas CCTs are required since normal trenches are not very effective.

Water retention and percolation increases the groundwater level and has been proved to restore water table so that bore wells get adequate water.

  5. The decrease in the ground water level has become a major problem at all the places. The best way to recharge your ground water level is to setup a rainwater-storage tank near your home's bore well. you should make a small pathway from all the places around your house towards this rainwater tank.so,this setup will definitely help you to collect all the rain waters around your house and also helps you to increase your area's groundwater level.

                                 thank you.

  6. There is a risk of contaminating the ground water when you do that.

You have to test the water that you are putting down the bore or well to make certain that it does not have chemical or bacterial contamination.

I would not recommend it. If you contaminate that water it will be almost impossible to clean it up and it will be unusable for the period of time that you are cleaning it up.

It would be better to drill the wells deeper rather than risk contaminating your source of water.

A safer way to recharge your groung water is through the use of what are called percolation ponds.

A percolation  pond is a pond that is made over a place where you have porous soil and rock all the way down to the water table.

You store your rainwatewr in that pond and it gradually filters down to the water table.

As the water filters down through several hundred feet of gravel most of the contamination is removed.
