Can England Afford to Play Without WayneRooney
Wayne Rooney went down on Tuesday night and left on crutches out of Manchester United’s Champion League match. Along with him left the hopes of millions of England’s fans who unanimously agree Rooney is England’s best striker. Bookmakers immediacy reflected the importance by moving the odds of England to 11 to 1. An unfortunate mishap with Bayern Munich caused Rooney’s exit and fans can only wait for the future to see how things shapeup.
Time is the only comforting factor; it may be enough for Rooney to be back in shape by June. Although it seems the injury is not that serious but if proper rest is not provided it can linger around. Some fans are already calling on Manchester United to rest Rooney as much as possible to make sure he is available in full forces during this summer's world cup in South Africa.
Rooney is not new to the injuries he has previously broken metatarsals twice in his career but recovered well every time to come back stronger than ever.
"A spokesperson told ManUtd.com, 'We're pleased to report that Wayne has not suffered a fracture. The scan revealed only minor ligament damage.'
"For now, the club is not commenting on how many games Wayne is likely to miss. However, Sir Alex Ferguson will say more about the matter in his regular press conference at Carrington on Friday morning."
There is no question about it; Wayne Rooney is the anchor for the England attack and without him it is not going to be easy. Although Manchester United announced today that the 24-year-old striker may be able to return to action this season, following a scan on his injury, the English fans don’t want to take any chances. There are tweets to rest Rooney while social groups are being formed to make sure Rooney is rested. England is still the favorite to qualify in group C, which also consists of USA, Algeria and Slovenia. But on Person to Person betting exchanges, England’s odds to win the World Cup have moved from 6 to 1 to 7.4 to 1.
One of the high street bookmakers in the UK Coral believes Rooney's fitness will have a significant bearing on the amount of patriotic pre-tournament betting on England. Even the Premier League’s prices shifted after Rooney’s injury.
Nothing can really be said for now on what the outcome will be. But one thing is for sure without Rooney England is to suffer even if that’s only in the mind. The English fans have been rushing to Rooney’s official website www.waynerooney.com, which has been down since 30 Mar 2010 23:01:27 GMT. I even tried to get to the site using Google Cached but still no luck. Everyone wants to know the status directly from Rooney rather than from Manchester United’s spokes person.
