Question:

Can Exam Table Paper be recycled?

I have several medical offices and am concerned at the amount of table paper we dispose of on a daily basis. For sanitary resons it is necessary that we continue to use table paper because there are no known alternatives. Can I recycle this paper just like I recycle other paper goods in my office? The exam paper would not contain any hazardous materials. Typically the exam paper is made of crepe paper. Thank you in advance for your help.

  1. I see no reason why this paper cannot be recycled like any other paper. Obviously if the paper is exposed to a biological hazard then that is another issue.

  2. as you rip off the old bit of paper, if you can be bothered, separate the soiled from the clean so dispose the clean paper in the recycling bin and dispose the soiled in the hazmat bin.

  3. Yes, but....

This type of paper contains wet strength resins that make it harder to recycle.  As long as the mill recycling it is aware that these resins are present, there is no issue.

If you add this to your regular recycle bin, it will cause problems in the recyle mill if it is co-mingled with non-wet strength materials.

  4. Well, why not?  Its a form of paper, right?  Just as long as it is not soiled.
