Can Federer win the Wimbledon 2008 given the way things are playing out?

Safin has replaced the Djokovic threat.Everybody knows that when Marat Safin is in form,he is the deadliest tennis player in the circuit.Should Fed overcome the Safin threat and meet Nadal in the final,he will have the odds against him.First,he has not improved over his 2007 form(Nadal has improved,by far).To beat Nadal,he must increase his aggressiveness, sharpen his angled volleys and reduce his unforced error rate to beat Nadal. He has not really impressed me in this year's Wimbledon, in the context of his abilities to beat Nadal.Secondly, the French open 2008 loss will still be fresh in his mind.I believe Federer has a better chance if Murray or Ancic takes out Nadal(I dont see any one else left who can beat Nadal).Fed fans should hope that he plays some one else in the final. For new records sake,I look forward to another Fed success but my fear for him is real and realistic.

  1. People arnt giving Fed the respect he deserves- 5 wimby titles?? hes gotta be the fav for gods sakes! he said hes the fav :)

Uh no safin isnt the biggest threat when hes in form, duh, roger is. when roger is playing his best nobody can stop him (like nobody canstop nadal at his best on clay, which he is was in this yrs RG).

Federer just beat hewiit in straight sets and hewitt played very very well. he didnt hit many unforced errors at all and fed really had 2 pull out something very close 2 an A game. so hes playing really well so far- hasnt dropped a set.

if rog meets nadal in the final then itll be close again im sure. but if federer serves really well h**l be very difficlut to break, and rafa has been broken alot already this tounry so id like feds chances (whos been broken, what, once??).

give the man some bloody credit.

  2. I would not rate Safin as a threat to Federer as Safin has so many off days that I do not think he has the consistency to beat Federer. And Safin has never proved himself on grass.

Nadal has been playing well but Federer is truley awesome on grass, remember Federer has not lost a match on a grass court for years now.

My money is still on Federer to beat Nadal in the final.

  3. Well first off, I still think it was complete bull to ever suggest Fed wasn't the favorite to win this tournament.  I don't care that he got trounced at the French or couldn't overcome Mono to win the Aussie, the guy has won five in a row here.  The road certainly got a bit easier when Novak sent that last ball into the net, giving Safin the upset, then again, with Safin in prime form it would seem, the bump in the road just got a little smaller, it's still there.

I'm not sure how you can say Federer would have the odds against him.  Maybe he hasn't improved his game since last year but I'm still not sure how Nadal has.  He claims that he has as do plenty of people like you, but I haven't seen any evidence of it.  He says that he slices the ball more and has a better serve, etc, I don't buy it at all, he looks just as good, which is pretty d**n good mind you, as usual.  Not to mention, the match last year wasn't as close as people think, Fed was off his game in that match and still pulled it out.  And I have no clue how you're not impressed by him so far this year, he hasn't dropped a set against a couple quality players, has been serving very well, coming to the net and is hitting winners from both sides.

Also, I don't think Federer would worry about Roland Garros if he were in the Wimbledon final.  It's like a team losing on the road but then coming back home, you feel so much more comfortable because it's your court or your field.  Obviously Federer would have a great chance if Nadal falls before the final, although I don't see that happening.  And... for the record, Ancic is on Federer's side of the draw, not Nadal's.  :-P

I'm a huge Fed fan and I want to see him play Nadal to shut people up who keep claiming that Nadal will take Wimbledon this year.  Even if he does it doesn't warrant all the boasting and claims in the last couple weeks, everything that Nadal fans have said has been completely presumptuous and without anything to back it up.  Nadal has still never beaten Federer on grass and until recently hadn't even won a tournament on grass, why should he be seen as the Wimbledon favorite over a guy with a 60+ match win streak on the same surface.  Ludicrous if you ask me.

  4. yes he can win

  5. Safin isn't a threat to Federer because he will not survive the clash with Wawrinka. On the other hand the lower half of the draw is that inferior so Rafa won't have big problems to reach the final (except Murray with the help of the English spectators can stop him).

btw, Ancic is in Federer's quarter and will therefore not face Rafa (except probably in the final :( ...)

my fear is the same as yours. i somehow feel that history repeat itself and the Fedster's time is over. but, i still have a tiny hope he can make no. 6

  6. Definitely.  Even if Djokovic was still in it, and even with the remaining players.  Despite a natural funk he's been in lately combined with more challenges towards him, it is still Federer and it is Wimbledon.

  7. yes please answer my question

  8. Well first off Fed is not thinking about the French Open, he is on his surface at his tournament which he is going to win for the 6th year in a row. Fed will get by Rusty in a good match going 3 sets or perhaps 4 but I think 3. Ancic will get by Verdasco but in a 4 or 5 set match and be tired from it. Safin will go down to Wawrinka who is the 2nd coming of Federer. and Lopez will beat Bags. Fed will face Wawrinka in the Semi and that will be his toughest challenge unless Wawrinka bows out or tones down his game out of respect to the GOAT.

Tipsarevic is playing very unSerbian. He hasn't embarrassed himself or his country and hasn't used any tricks or fake injuries to beat his competition. He may get by Schuettler who used to be #4 about 5 years ago but it will be a close match. I'm picking Rainer in 4 or 5. Cilic will walk over Clement in 3. Gasquet is finally playing like he should and will take Murray out in 4. Youzhny will pull another Wimby upset and take out Rafa. Gasquet will play Cilic in the semi with the Final being Fed vs. Gasquet and Fed winning in 4.
