Question:

Can Freon Go Bad?

They are replacing my burned out compressor and I thought I had read or heard somewhere that freon can go bad if the compressor burns out. Is that right? I have no idea why my compressor burned out (this is a little used A/C unit that is about 5 years old), but they are planning on pumping the freon out, storing it, and then pumping it back in, after the new compressor is installed. Is that okay?

Thanks.

  1. donot use freon from a burn up compreesor tehy must recycle the old freon if they plan on using the the freon get some one else to do the work a good a/c service company would never do tjhis

  2. After a comressor burnout the refrigerant is not to be reused.

It can contain acid which will enhance the burnout of the new compressor. It will eat the motor windings up in a hurry.

The liquid line drier is to be changed and a suction line dryer is added and later removed after a month of operation, when it has absorbed acid residue.

Virgin refrigerant is then put in the system after the contaminated refrigerant is removed and disposed of.

If they are not following theses procedures at your house, chances are that it is not a burnout, just a stuck motor compressor.

  3. I was taught not to do that because of contaminants from the compressor burning out.
