Can Gary Woodland’s team win the 2012 Tavistock Cup?
Gary Woodland is playing in the four-time winner, Team Lake Nona, competing well at the Tavistock Cup.
The first round of the tournament has finished and Isleworth is currently standing atop the leaderboard by scoring -26.
Team Lake Nona is on the second position with only two strokes behind the leading team.
The Tavistock Cup is being staged at the Floridian site of the Lake Nona Golf & Country Club, Orlando.
Four teams are competing that displayed amazing performances against each other on Monday, March 19, 2012.
However, Lake Nona is the favourite team of the tournament. It is famous for winning four times since the 2004 edition.
There are six players in the team, namely, Gary Woodland, Graeme McDowell, Peter Hanson, Retief Goosen, Ross Fisher and Ben Curtis.
Among these six, most of the players are famous and renowned for their achievements. They are in their full form and are defending the title and the $2,170,000 purse well.
If we look at the individual performances of Lake Nona players, then the standing of the team will be easier to explain.
Woodland, a 27-year-old American, is currently ranked at the 59th position. He has played seven tournaments in 2012 and mostly finished among the top-30 on the leaderboard.
His best score of 6-under par was in the 2012 Transitions Championship and Waste Management Phoenix Open.
His scoring average and driving accuracy is one of the best. His presence in Lake Nona is making the team stronger.
McDowell, a 32-year-old Northern Irish, is also a renowned player for his victory at the US Open in 2010.
He played only three events on the PGA this year and amazingly finished the Honda Classic on the ninth spot.
His scores and strokes are amazing. He has enough capabilities to turn the results in his team’s favour. Among the six players, he is the hottest and the best golfer as well.
The Swedish Hanson displayed enormous scores at the Accenture Match Play Championship and Cadillac Championship.
Both the tournaments were staged by the World Golf Championship and the 34-year-old finished among top-5 in both the events.
His performances at the WGC-staged events were amazing. He was the toughest rival on both the courses and gave a tough time to the others.
Goosen, a 43-year-old South African was unable to impress the spectators since January. He has not won any title nor has he finished among the top-25 on the leaderboard so far.
He is an easy target for the other teams and can be defeated easily. However, his presence at Lake Nona will not create any hurdle for the team, as the rest are capable of carding good scores.
Similarly, Fisher is a new lad and has less experience than the others have. He has not played any PGA staged event this year and his performance on the European Tour is also unattractive.
Like Goosen, he is also an easy target and, as he is not in form these days.
The last player, Curtis is an average player. It was 2006 when he won his last title at the PGA and since then he has been working hard to improve his scoring average and driving.
After looking at the players' achievements and statistics, it can be estimated that Team Lake Nona has four tremendous players and the remaining are average.
Competing for the title could be slightly difficult this year. The complete scores after the first round were Isleworth -26, Lake Nona -24, Albany -23 and Queenwood -17.
Lake Nona is only two strokes behind the leading team and has ample chances to lead on Tuesday, in the second round of the tournament.
On the other hand, Albany is also a competent team and is delivering its best. There is a chance for both, Albany and Lake Nona, to defeat Isleworth on Tuesday.
What really needs to be done is to be more competitive. All the six players of Lake Nona have to show extra efforts in the second round to lead over Team Isleworth and Albany at the end of the day.
