  1. I don't think they'll notify you directly. However, I can think of an indirect way to do it. Get yourself a google adwords account and buy advertising space on your name (and only your name, don't let google 'expand' your results for you). Then whenever someone searches for your name the number of impressions for your advert will increase. You'll probably also need a landing page of some sort for the advert, but most people seem to have bebo or myspace pages these days, just make a public page.

  2. Yes they can  -- go to http://www.google.com/alerts and sign up for google alerts

you can set the  time interval (daily, weekly, etc) and the source - news items, websites, blogs, etc for any search terms.

For your own name , maybe put it in quotes - "Your Name"  - so you don't get notified for every hit with your first or  surname only.

This is also a neat way to see who else in the world has the same name as you.

You can also get alerts for any terms - like your blog, your website, your mom's name, or a news or  sports story you are following, etc

Each time they send you an  alert, they include links to change, add new ones or remove alerts.

    Have fun!
