Question:

Can Guinea Pigs and Muskrats interbreed???

I'm not trying to breed any, I'm just curious.

I was pet sitting a friend's two female Guinea Pigs, and my daughter took one outside by the lake.

There are some Muskrats that live by the shore and have tunnels that lead up to the grass of the yard. Sometimes the Muskrats will peek out of holes they have made out by the edge of my lawn and pop back down.

Anyway, when she put the Guinea Pig, she ran fast to the Muskrats' peek hole at the end of the lawn and tried to climb down into it.

I was just wondering if maybe she was "in heat" and perhaps smelled the scent of the male Muskrat and wanted to breed with him???

  1. no they cant breed, they are two different animals totally, just like a rat and a guinea pig couldn't breed successfully.

  2. More likely, the guinea pig was afraid and trying to hide, the hole being the nearest place to do so.  Guinea pigs are very timid by nature and, in the wild, live in holes in the ground built by other species.

  3. Actually, there are very few cases of inter-species breeding, at least successfully. Two species may have intercourse, however, as you're no doubt well aware  of, but different species are actually so called specifically because of their inability to breed.

  4. No, they cannot interbreed. I still would not take the guinea pigs outside anywhere near muskrats, as they could transfer some diseases to the guinea pigs.
