Question:

Can Headphones (in-ear) Cause Future Hearing Loss?

I ask this because I'm constantly listening 2 my MP3 player. I definitely don't like the volume high, but it's almost always in my ear, and at times my ear sweats/itches/stings...also I've had ear infections in the past, but about something different. I'm just concerned though, any help/advice?

  1. If you keep the volume low it will not damage your hearing, however, your eardrum needs oxygen.  If the hole is plugged most of the time you could starve it.  Maybe moderation should be considered.  Also, if the headphone fits tight it might alter blood circulation.  Your ear needs dry air to prevent infection.  If you plug up a damp hole, bacteria will grow.

  2. you could if you turn it up too high but, if it's like a normal volume you will be fine

  3. Do guns kill people? No, stupid people kill people. Same thing with headphones.

The key is, when you have a comfortable level set on your device, do not later turn it up higher. Your ears adjust to the volume you have set. Turning it up later is when you risk the damage.

Thus if you go deaf because you turned your MP3 player/radio/car stereo up too loud, don't sue the manufacturer because you are stupid.

It is natural for your outer ear to itch, hurt, or sweat when you have something stuck in it all day long. The shape of everyones' ears are different and manufacturers design their headphones to the lowest denominator for shape and size.

If you are really concerned about the pain, you can have custom earphones made that conform exactly to your ear canal. I just hope you have $600+ to have them molded for you.
