I have 2 tanks. A 10 gal. with 8 guppies i just added 3 ghost shrimp to the batch. I did a bit of reasearch and found out a female ghost shrimp has eggs in her. So scence i have guppies i have a isolation tank were i put the female a week before shes due. So i moved the ghost shrimpp over in to it. But i read they need salt added to the water for there babies to be sucsesful but right now in the isolation tank is a pregnant female guppy and some 1 month old fry. Will the salt be bad for the guppies plus what kind of salt and how much do i add.

Thanks A Lot.

  1. Guppies can tolerate a little salt.

  2. For a salt tank its special salt you buy at a pet store, and the salt is not good for the guppies, and before you kill your fish research on web sites that are more informational then Y answers.

  3. i add a little bit salt to my tanks. therapeutic dosage recommended is 1 tablespoon for every 10 gallons water but i only use about half the dosage.

since you have 1 mth old fry you might want to add very little salt at first than gradually add some more to allow your fry to adapt to the new water condition.

i use sea salt (aquarium salt).. its the most natural salt without additive such as iodine and calcium silicate.

  4. buy aquarium salt and guppies need this type of salt too for they actually live in brackish waters at times...

Add -   krennao just so you know, maybe you should do some research, there are several salts in the pet stores that are sold to customers plain old aquarium salt(which is commonly used from goldfish to cichlids) and marine or sea salt are two examples. so you know, guppies can take both salts for they actually crave a little bit of salt.

ADD - you would add as much as you took out(per gallon wise). If you are just topping the tank off then no, don't add salt.

  5. Actually, guppies, like all livebearers, prefer salt in their tanks. For all freshwater aquarium fish, salt is beneficial, as it prevents stress, prevents infection and disease, provides a comforting slime coat for the fish, and is just good for them. Livebearer fish, especially mollies and guppies, particularly like salt in their tanks because in their natural habitats there is a little bit of salt in the water. Purchase Aquarium salt crystals at the store, DO NOT USE TABLE SALT!!! Table salt contains harmful ions that may kill fish. Put 1 tablespoon of salt crystals per every 5 gallons of fish tank water, or 1/2 teaspoon per gallon. This will be better for your shrimp and your fish :-)

    Good luck!!
