Question:

Can I Change Duty Stations?

I just finished OSUT at Fort Benning and am supposed to report to Fort Hood (1st Cavalry) next week. Once I arrive there, what steps can I take to get transferred to another base? I'm an 11B infantryman and want to get transferred to a light infantry unit. How can I go about doing this?

Thanks

  1. Once you get to a new duty station, you have to serve, at a bare minimum, 12 months....but they do not usually move you until you are near the 3 year mark. Moving at 12 months usually only happens for special circumstances.

  2. In the Marine Corps, you have to be stationed there at least 2 years and can REQUEST a change...unless there's a huge issue where you have to be near a family member who needs help or something. The Army is probably different, probably more lenient. Just ask when you get there.

  3. Although the Army may be different in many ways, in the Air Force you have to be on station for 3 yrs. before you can P.C.S. out, however, you can update your dream-sheet (put in for orders) now.  Talk to your supervisor about instructions on PCSing.
