My winter white dwarf hamster had 4 babies one week ago exactly. Since tomorrow they will be 8 days old. Can I feed them a little piece of a vegetable something?? If I can, what should I feed em? All I have is red apples, egg, and baby carrots(all things hamsters can eat). Is one of these acceptable?

  1. i read on this site that if you interfere with the mother, pups, or cage in the first 3 weeks of life the mother may pick up your scent or be stressed and abandon or eat her young.

  2. Stay away from fruit until they are older. The natural sugar in fruit could kill them at that age. I would go with cut up baby carrots, lettuce, and maybe cheese.

Go to Petsmart and talk to the Pet Care Manager, animal care updates happen as quickly as human care does. There maybe something new on them that they know that I missed.

  3. Mine had 5 pups and they are 3 weeks old now.  Just yesterday I started putting fresh apple pieces out for them and they came out of the nest to eat. I also lowered the water bottle so they could start drinking,  I know you are not supposed to go near the babies at all or disturb the nest until they are 21 to 28 days old. I also put spray millet (tiny tiny seeds sold for birds on a stem) in for them and they are eating it also.

Look at the website below. It's a wealth of information !

  4. You need to wait two to three weeks until you mess with the babies.
