hello, I am thirteen, I live in Canada, Alberta!

I was wondering if lets say my friend was a commercial pilot if he took me up and I flew could I use those hours towards my flight hours? Or do they have to be an instructor?

  1. In the United States, no.  I also searched the CARs (Canadian Aviation Regulations), but I'm unfamiliar with the format and contents, so I can't find exactly what I'm looking for.

In the United States, flight time will fall under the category of Pilot in Command, Second in Command, or training.

Pilot in Command requires proper certification, meaning at least a private pilot certificate (or sport pilot) or a student pilot certificate if flying solo.

Second in Command requires a certificate appropriate to the type of operation in an operation that requires a second in command.

Training time requires a logbook endorsement from the authorized flight instructor conducting the training.

Outside of these categories, there are no provisions for logging flight time, so your scenario would not work in the United States.  I would assume that Canadian regulations are similar.  Hopefully somebody familiar with the CARs can confirm this.

  2. I think you can get Second in Command Time.  But you might not be able to count them because of your age.  In the US you have to be sixteen to start training and that is probably the age you have to be to start "gaining" flight hours.

  3. No you cannot. You need to fly with a certified flight instructor or you cannot log the time. You cannot even serve as a second-in-command or a "safety pilot" until you hold at least a private license and have the appropriate aircraft ratings. You can begin flight training at 13, although you cannot be licensed until 17. Go here to read the requirements: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilot_licen...
