Can I Make A Career Out Of Breeding Cockatiels And Parakeets?

Dear Yahoo! Answer Members,

I was thinking that I didn't want to go to college, because it costs to much money, and I'm not the most social person in the world. And the people on Y!A said that I don't have to go to college to breed them. And I want to make enough money and enjoy what I do for the rest of my life.

I'm experienced with parakeets and cockatiels, but not breeding them, but I am going to learn before I start. I was wondering how many birds I should breed at a time? I know people don't make that much money, but since they are the two most popular birds in the world, I thought I could live on that. And I do understand I need to buy nest boxes, food, and cages for them. And I am prepared to take them to a vet, and to take care of them if the mother and father reject them. I can't do it for another six years, but I thought I should start learning now.

So can I make a career out of it? And for the people who are experienced with breeding cockatiels and parakeets, or other birds for a living, how well did it work for you?

  2. Hello.

To answer this question of yours , that mean I have to tell you my personal life.

I will be general as much as I can .

I do breeding birds first for hobby ( because I suffered a depression , so when I know birds would make me happy , I saved my money to buy them : One pair of finches was the first pair I ever bought 4 years ago ) . I put out a lot of money to buy the birds , cages and built 2 new aviaries , buy one used one . 2 years after  , my husband built a garage with high tech heating systems , 6 lights and 2 fans for my birds in the garage . To be short , I put a lot of money in this , and just for my hobby . Later , a part time hobby turn into an over time job ...My pairs keep having so many babies , so I had to sell them . Unfortunately, I don't sell them as fast as the babies hatch , so now I have 3 aviaries and one bird room full of birds .

You don't have to go to college to learn how to breed birds . I learned from experts , from all the breeders whom I bought birds from .

Now I wish to sell half of my birds to reduce the work load . If you are somewhere in US , near east coast , please contact me so I can give you a good deal on breeding proven pairs , nest boxes and cages . I am in Milton, DE . If you need more info , you can email me and I will answer all the questions that you need to know , to go in the birds business . You can find me in www.hoobly.com , search breeders in DE . TM.

  3. No you are not likely to be able to make a living off of breeding birds if you do it right.  If you are lucky the birds will pay for themselves but they aren't going to pay the bills.  Unless you plan on becoming a bird mill (like a puppy mill only with birds) then bird breeding is a hobby not a job.

Yes tiels and keets are the 2 most popular bird bred but the are also easy breeders and there are many hobby breeders which means there is not a huge market opening for them.  The are also among the leaset expensive birds with keets being between $10-20 unless they are a very rare mutation and handraised tiels averaging $50-200 depending on mutatin and quality

  4. Yes and no. I think it would be a good carreer. I love my parakeets :] and you should love what you do. Idk how much money it would make..
