Hey all, I have a curiosity question and need some help answering it. I'm currently a Junior in high school, and going to Scotland after I graduate in 2009. I was curious to know how hard it would be to stay there... I know livings a bit higher and I might have to get a student visa, etc, but has anyone actually DONE this? Let me know if you can help.... Thanks!

oh, P.S. also thinking of doing the same in New Zealand.. any thoughts on that?

  1. The strongest universities in Scotland include St. Andrews, Glasgow U, and Edinburgh U. As an American, you can certainly apply to a university in Scotland, as an international student. You'll need to ask each university what qualifications they want from an American applicant, as you won't have the GCSEs or A level exams that most UK applicants will have. Each uni does have info about this on their website, but for specifics, you really do need to ask them. You will need a student visa, but again, the school can help you with that process.

Once you graduate from a Scottish university, you can stay and work in Scotland for two years, without needing a work visa, through their Fresh Talent Initiative. I've linked to info, below.

I know far less about New Zealand, although I do know that they, like Scotland, are actively seeking skilled workers, and do have some schemes in place to retain their university graduates.

  2. Sorry I don't know. Try the links below which could be of help. There are a lot of US students in Scotland though, so it must be possible. :-)
