I'm 13 and I bought Vitamin A from Vitamin World (http://www.vitaminworld.com/pages/file.asp?xs=F56AC7CBCF7F45568A900D1BAF16B607&PID=91&CID=&CPID=460) and I'm not sure if it's good for me. It says that an adult should take one daily, and I'm only 13. It has only 10,000 IU and I read in a website that at least 30,000 IU is good to treat acne. So I was wondering if it's okay to take 3 a day?

  1. You can overdose on Vitamin A.

It's fat-soluble, so if you take too much, it will be stored in your body and can cause problems.

    Note:

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for men and women is 900 and 700 μg retinol activity equivalents (RAE)/day, respectively. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for adults is set at 3,000 μg/day of preformed vitamin A.

  2. YES! TOO much of Anything is Not Good for your Body.

  3. Vitamin A, like vitamins D, E, and K are "fat soluble" vitamins.  Basically this means, that unlike all other vitamins (vitamin C, etc) they can stay in your body in fat stores.  Too much of any of these fat-soluble vitamins can be harmful.

Vitamin A is good for acne, but is most effective as the topical retinoid form such as tretinoin.  The vitamin A in topical formulas (creams, gels, etc) is not absorbed into the bloodstream in large amounts so it's much less likely to get too much vitamin A from topical preparations.

Talk to a parent or your doctor or dermatologist about your concerns -- they can help you find a product that is both safe and effective.

    I hope this helps!

  4. Yes, actually.  Polar bear liver has soooo much vitamin A that if you eat any of it it will kill you.  In times when they were killed by natives, they never gave it to the dogs..

As for your question take no more than recommended.  If in doubt, ask your pharmacist.

  5. Yes. Taking too much of any fat-soluble vitamins is not a good idea. This will lead to a type of hypervitaminosis. Headache, visual changes, and impaired consciousness suggestive of pseudotumor cerebri may occur. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and blurry vision. These are all symptoms common to vitamin A toxicity. However, in small children, an extreme excess of vitamin A is known to cause more severe symptoms, some which can affect the child's growth and vision considerably. It can also damage your liver.

A better way to help clear your acne is to first, stay away from processed foods. This means no junk food, no colas, no fastfood, no fatty foods etc. The more fresh and wholesome your food choices are, the healthy it is for your body. Besides, one of the ways the body gets rid of toxins from processed foods is from the skin, and that can aggravate acne. Next, practice good hygiene. Wash you face several times throughout the day with mild soap and cold water. You can also use anti-acne products, but sparingly. Finally, work out. There is nothing better for your skin than your sweat. It is a natural way that helps "kill" bacteria in your skin and opens your pores to unclog them from all the dirt and grease that has accumulated over time. After the work out, wash your face with cold water. Just remember to not overwash your face so that your skin becomes too dry. If that happens a mild moisturizer with natural ingredients is ok to use.
