Can I Take My Mom's Car To College With Me and It's Still Insured in Her Name?

I'm planning to purchase a car, it will be in my moms name but it's mainly for me when i go back to school. Is it possible that i take the car and have her as the only person under the insurance so she won't have to pay the high insurance once I'm added to it? Is this possible. I heard State Farm will allow this- but I don't know if that's true or not.

  1. Nope.  The car is provided for your regular use. You need to be listed on the policy. Otherwise, you risk not having coverage if an accident happens.

  2. Have your mom as a lein holder on the car this way the car is yours to a point and she can add you as a driver and save alot on insurance

  3. No, it doesn't matter whose name the car is in.  Since you are a full time student, you are considered part of your Mothers household and therefore the insurance will be rated as such.  There is no way around it that I know of.
