Can I access XBOX Live without a router?

I am using an XBOX 360, running Windows Vista on my laptop. Currently, I have an ethernet cable running from my laptop to my XBOX. The XBOX connects to the laptop, but cannot acquire an ip address. Is there any way to assign one using Windows Vista? I have no router, just the ethernet cable.

if your go to start then type cmd into 'run' and then a window will open then type ipconfig into that window which will give you the IP of your laptop then try to manually type the ip address into your xbox on the system blade, if this doesnt work im totally unsure of what to do, inless you ask your manager to give you the pasword so your can access live???
