Can I add a better graphics card to my laptop if it comes with one that has shared memory? I'm using a dell inspiron 1525 with a shared memory Intel GMA X3100 graphics card. I'd really like a dedicated one.

  1. Yes you can. Once you have the new one installed you can go into the BIOS (Only if you know what you are doing) and turn off the on board video card which will free up the shared memory.

If you do not know how to do this, your local computer tech can help you out.

  2. No. The above poster is just wrong. That applies to desktops, but laptops are designed to house all of the factory components and no more. Some laptops will have an expansion option for an additional hard drive, but I have yet to see an option for adding a video card to a laptop designed for integrated, ie. on the mobo, video.

  3. no the graphics are integrated into the board

all you can do is update your drivers and give more memory to the graphics in the bios
