Can I adopt my stepdad?

Is it possible for me to adopt my stepdad? He's not actually my stepdad yet, but he is engaged to my Mom. I'm 17 years old, but I think by the time they get married I might be 18. I think I might not be able to though because my biological father is still alive, but I never talk to him or anything. I want to adopt him so i can legally call him my Dad.

  1. your stepdad can adopt you if your real dad gives consent.. but you don't need a legal document to call him dad.

  2. What the poster above said is correct, your bio-dad has to consent to the adoption since he is still alive.

However, you can still claim him as your dad. There is no rule or law that prohibits that.. and if you are super adamant on being adopted by your step-dad and being "his" then when you are 18 you can change your last name to his legally.

I know this because I have a step-dad to that is my dad and we went through the same thing.. we had looked into changing my name but decided against it because we knew that I would be changing my name later anyway through marriage.

  3. I just want to say that this is one of the sweetest question's I have ever read.  your step dadd must me a great guy.  I don't have an answer for you, but whatever happens I wish you and your whole family the best!
