Can I answer check with checkmate?

Question

If a player puts me in check, do I have to move my king out of the way, or can my next move be to put the other player in checkmate? I was hoping that checkmate from me trumps check from him, if you get what I mean.. but my husband says no, I have to remove the threat to my king first before I can put him in checkmate.. even though I had him in checkmate one move later anyway. In case it's not clear, our kings were on different parts of the board - I mean, me putting him in checkmate did nothing to protect my own king - the two gameplays were simply happening at the same time (not in the same place).

You do have to get out of the check -- but you can create a checkmate with that same move.

It is possible but highly improbable.  You have to block the check to your king first and that would have to be done by moving a piece to block the check that unmasks another of your pieces giving checkmate.

You have to get out of check.  You don't have to move your king to do that.

If you block the check or capture the piece checking you and that results in his checkmate, yes, you can.

If it doesn't get you out of check, sorry, but you must deal with his threat first.

The other 2 answers are wrong.  If your able to take the piece that is causing the check AND that move also creates checkmate then U got it !!  You can ALWAYS take the piece causing check to get out of check but most of the time you will not get checkmate.  Also most of the time the piece causing check is not where any of your pieces can take it so good luck finding the ONE board position that Will give you both.

Your husband is correct - even tho he could do nothing to escape his king being taken on the following turn, the fact you hadn't protected your king means it would be taken and there IS no following turn.
